Volleyball basics
Volleyball is played 6-a-side on a 18m × 9m court divided by a net (2.43m for men, 2.24m for women at international level). Teams score by grounding the ball on the opponent's court. Rally scoring is used — any team scores on any rally. Games are played to 25 points (win by 2); matches are typically best of 5 sets, with the 5th set played to 15. Each team has a maximum of 3 hits to return the ball over the net (not counting a block touch).

What is the libero in volleyball?
The libero is a specialist defensive player who wears a contrasting jersey and has unique substitution rules — they can replace any back-row player without it counting as a substitution, and substitutions involving the libero do not count against the team's substitution limit. The libero cannot serve, spike above the net height, or set from the front zone. Liberos are typically shorter, quicker players with excellent passing and digging skills.
What is a kill in volleyball?
A kill is an attack that directly results in a point — either by landing in bounds on the opponent's side without being dug, or by being deflected out of bounds off a blocker. Kill percentage (kills ÷ total attack attempts) is the primary offensive efficiency metric. Elite outside hitters typically maintain 40–50%+ kill efficiency in competitive play. Service aces and opposing errors are scored separately.
What is rotation in volleyball?
Volleyball teams rotate clockwise after winning a side-out (regaining the serve). All 6 players must be in their correct rotational position when the serve is made, but can move freely once the ball is in play. Rotation determines who serves next and governs where the libero can legally enter.
