A block occurs when a defending player (or players) contact the ball above the net to deflect or terminate an opponent’s attack. A solo block wins the point outright; a block assist deflects the ball for the back row to dig. Blocks per set is the standard measure: above 1.0 per set is strong for a middle blocker. Net touches and reaching-over errors count against blocking efficiency. Top middle blockers combine high block rate with low error rate.
