Snowboarding basics

Stance width is one of the most important setup decisions for any snowboarder. Too narrow and you lose stability; too wide and you lose leverage over the board. The general guideline is shoulder-width or slightly wider, measured between the centre of each binding. Your binding angles (the degrees each foot points forward or backward) depend on riding style: positive angles on both feet suit beginners and all-mountain riders; duck stance (one foot angled forward, one back) suits freestyle and park riders.

Calorie burn varies enormously with terrain and intensity. A beginner spending much of the day on greens burns far fewer calories than an advanced rider hitting steep black runs and park features continuously. The calorie calculator accounts for bodyweight, duration, and riding intensity to give a realistic estimate.

What is the correct snowboard stance width?

The standard starting point is shoulder-width — measured from the centre of your left binding to the centre of your right. Most riders end up between 50–60cm. Wider stances improve stability and are preferred by park and pipe riders; narrower stances give more leverage for carving. Start at shoulder-width and adjust from there based on how the board feels.

What stance angles should a beginner use?

A beginner-friendly setup: +15° front foot, 0° rear foot (or +15° front, +3° rear). This forward-facing stance is more intuitive for learning edge control and linking turns. Avoid duck stance (negative rear angle) until you are comfortable riding all terrain — the outward rear angle makes learning turn initiation harder.

How many calories does snowboarding burn per hour?

A 75kg rider snowboarding at moderate intensity (varied terrain, not pushing hard) burns approximately 300–400 calories per hour. Aggressive riding on steep runs or in the park burns 400–600+ calories per hour. The significant variation comes from the intensity of active riding versus time on lifts — track active riding time separately for a more accurate estimate.
