Frequently asked questions

What is kumi kata?

Kumi kata is the term for the gripping in judo. It literally means 'grappling posture' or 'gripping form'. Controlling kumi kata is critical at high-level judo — many elite matches are decided in the grip battle before a throw is even attempted.

Can I grip the belt or legs in judo?

Belt grips below the hip (pistol grip, belt grab) and leg grabs were banned from IJF competition in 2010. In randori and club training, rules vary — check with your coach. In competition, only sleeve and lapel grips above the belt are standard (with certain exceptions for defensive gripping).
