Frequently asked questions

How do you win a judo match?

The cleanest way is ippon — a full point won by throwing the opponent largely on their back with control, pinning them for 20 seconds, or forcing a submission (via armlock or strangle). Ippon wins instantly. Two waza-ari (half-points) also combine for ippon. Otherwise the highest score wins at the end; a third penalty (shido) hands victory to the opponent.
