Understanding cricket metrics
Net Run Rate (NRR) is the primary tiebreaker in group stage cricket competitions. It measures the difference between a team's average runs per over scored and average runs per over conceded across all group matches. A positive NRR means a team is scoring faster than it is conceding on average.
Required Run Rate (RRR) is the average runs per over a batting team needs to score to win from the current position. As overs decrease and the required score increases, RRR rises — when it exceeds 12–15 runs per over, winning becomes very difficult in most conditions.

What is the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method?
DLS (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern) is the mathematical method used to set revised targets in rain-affected limited-overs cricket matches. It calculates a revised target based on the resources (overs remaining and wickets in hand) available to each team, aiming to give the team batting second an equivalent challenge to what the team batting first faced. The DLS target calculator applies the standard method to any rain interruption scenario.
How is net run rate calculated in cricket?
NRR = (total runs scored ÷ total overs faced) − (total runs conceded ÷ total overs bowled). This is calculated across all group stage matches, not per game. A team bowled out before their overs are complete uses the full allocated overs in the denominator (not their actual balls faced). The net run rate calculator handles this correctly and shows how a result would affect your group stage NRR.
What does economy rate mean in cricket?
Economy rate is the average number of runs a bowler concedes per over. Economy = runs conceded ÷ overs bowled. In Test cricket, an economy rate below 3.0 is considered economical; in ODIs, below 5.0 is good; in T20s, below 8.0 is acceptable. Bowlers with both low economy rates and high wicket-taking rates are the most valuable in all formats.
