Frequently asked questions
How much weight can I safely cut per week?
Most sports medicine and NCAA/NFHS guidance caps safe weight loss at around 1–1.5% of bodyweight per week through gradual caloric adjustment and hydration management — not dehydration. Faster cuts rely on water loss, which impairs strength, cognition and cardiovascular function right when you need them most.
Should I cut weight through dehydration before a match?
No. Rapid dehydration-based cutting (sauna suits, excessive sweating, fluid restriction) is explicitly restricted or banned in many wrestling federations because of documented health risks, including several historical fatalities in US collegiate wrestling. A gradual cut through diet and normal training is the safer, and often faster-recovering, approach.
