What is 500m Split (Rowing)?

The time to row 500 metres — the universal pace unit used by Concept2 ergometers.

Rowing pace is universally expressed as the time per 500 metres (500m split). A 2:00/500m split means covering 500m in 2 minutes. The Concept2 formula converts split to watts: Watts = 2.80 ÷ (split in seconds ÷ 500)³. A 2:00 split = approximately 202 watts. Benchmark splits: beginners 2:30-3:00; recreational 2:00-2:30; competitive club 1:45-2:00; elite sub-1:30 for 2K. The 2000m race is the standard competitive distance, equivalent to holding a target split for 8 minutes.
