Watts measure the mechanical power output on a Concept2 ergometer, calculated from your 500m split using the formula: watts = 2.8 ÷ (split in seconds / 500)³. Power scales with the cube of speed — a 10% faster split requires roughly 33% more power. Watts per kilogram is a useful normalised fitness metric, similar to cycling’s W/kg. A recreational rower might average 150-200W over 2000m; elite rowers exceed 450W.
Key points
- Power = 2.8 ÷ (split/500)³
- Scales with cube of speed
- W/kg normalises for bodyweight
- Elite 2000m: 450W+
