What does durometer (the 'a' number) mean?
Durometer measures wheel hardness. Most wheels use the 'A' scale: 78a is very soft (cruiser/longboard), 87a is mid (some street/rough), 97–101a is hard (street, park, vert). Hard wheels are fast on smooth surfaces but transmit all vibration. Soft wheels absorb bumps but are slower for tricks.
Will bigger wheels cause wheel bite?
Wheel bite (when the wheel touches the deck and stops you suddenly) is a risk with larger wheels and lower trucks. Fix it with riser pads (1/8" or 1/4" depending on wheel size), tighter trucks, or a cut deck. As a guide: wheels over 55mm often need risers on standard trucks.
