Rugby league is played 13-a-side on a pitch up to 100m × 68m. Scoring: try = 4 points; conversion = 2 points; penalty goal = 2 points; drop goal = 1 point. The key rule that defines league: each team has 6 tackles to advance the ball and score before possession transfers. What happens after 6 tackles in rugby league?
After 6 tackles, possession transfers to the opposition at the point where the last tackle was made. Most teams kick on the 6th tackle to either contest for possession (grubbers and bomb kicks) or to gain field position (40-20 kicks, touch finders). Kicking on the 5th tackle is a common strategy to give the kicker more time and position for a better kick — the 6th tackle possession transfer is automatic.
What is a 40-20 kick in rugby league?
A 40-20 kick is a special rule reward: if a player kicks the ball from behind their own 40-metre line and it bounces into touch beyond the opposition's 20-metre line, the kicking team retains possession with a scrum. It is a high-risk, high-reward skill play that can generate significant field position advantage. Specialist kickers practise 40-20s as a core part of their game — they occur several times per season in top-level play.
How does the Super League season work?
Super League (the top tier of rugby league in the UK and France) consists of 12 clubs playing a round-robin regular season (each club plays every other twice) followed by a play-off series. The top 6 teams qualify for the play-offs. The Grand Final at Old Trafford, Manchester determines the champion. The team finishing bottom of the regular season is relegated or enters a Million Pound Game against the Championship play-off winner.
