Frequently asked questions

Do you have to win by 2 in pickleball?

Yes — a game to 11 must be won by 2 clear points, so if the score reaches 10-10, play continues until one side leads by 2 (e.g. 12-10, 13-11). There's no upper cap in standard rules, so a close game can extend well beyond 11.

What is side-out scoring in pickleball?

In traditional side-out scoring, only the serving side can win a point. If the receiving side wins the rally, they don't score — they win the serve (a 'side out'). This is why pickleball scores are called as three numbers in doubles (serving score, receiving score, server number). Rally scoring, where every rally scores, is used in some newer formats.
