What is the 'track' on a house pattern?
The track is the worn path in the oil from repeated use. On house patterns, the oil channels high-usage shots toward the pocket. Experienced bowlers look for the track to get a free hook — beginners benefit from it without knowing why their ball curves into the pocket.
How do I know if the pattern is breaking down?
If your ball starts hooking earlier or harder than your first few shots, the oil is depleted (breaking down). Move your feet or target slightly left (right-handers) to follow the fresh oil, or switch to a ball with a weaker surface.
