Baseball statistics basics

Baseball is the most statistically rich of all major team sports. The key offensive metrics: Batting Average (BA) = hits ÷ at-bats — the simplest measure of hitting success. On-Base Percentage (OBP) = (hits + walks + HBP) ÷ plate appearances — more complete than BA as it includes all ways of reaching base. Slugging Percentage (SLG) = total bases ÷ at-bats — weights extra-base hits. OPS = OBP + SLG — the most widely used single offensive metric.

Key pitching metrics: ERA = (earned runs × 9) ÷ innings pitched — measures run prevention per 9 innings. WHIP = (walks + hits) ÷ innings pitched — measures baserunner prevention.

What is a good batting average in baseball?

In Major League Baseball, a .300 batting average is considered excellent — only a small percentage of hitters maintain it across a full season. The MLB average BA typically sits around .245–.255. A .270–.290 average is above average; .250–.270 is around league average; below .230 is poor for a starting player. Note that batting average has declined as a metric in modern baseball analysis, with OPS and wRC+ (weighted runs created plus) considered more complete measures of offensive value.

What does OPS stand for in baseball?

OPS stands for On-Base Plus Slugging — the sum of a batter's on-base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG). It is the most widely used single-number offensive summary in modern baseball. An OPS above .900 is excellent; .800–.900 is above average; .700–.800 is average; below .700 is below average. OPS+ adjusts OPS for ballpark factors and the season's offensive environment, with 100 representing league average.

How is ERA calculated in baseball?

ERA (Earned Run Average) = (Earned Runs × 9) ÷ Innings Pitched. Only earned runs count — runs that score due to errors or passed balls are unearned and excluded. An ERA below 3.00 is excellent for a starting pitcher in the modern MLB era; 3.00–4.00 is above average; 4.00–5.00 is around league average; above 5.00 is poor for a starter. Relief pitchers often post lower ERAs because they pitch shorter stints in more controlled situations.
