What is Tennis Rating (NTRP / UTR)?

Systems that measure a tennis player's standard, including NTRP, UTR and the ITF number.

Several systems rate tennis ability. NTRP (US, 1.0-7.0) describes skill bands. UTR (Universal Tennis Rating, 1-16+) rates players on one global scale from juniors to pros based on actual match results, regardless of age or sex — increasingly the worldwide standard. The ITF World Tennis Number (1-40, lower is better) is another global system. They don't convert exactly because each measures differently.

Key points
  • NTRP: US bands 1.0-7.0
  • UTR: global 1-16+, results-based
  • ITF number: 1-40, lower is better
