Pressing in football is an active defensive strategy where a team aggressively challenges opponents in possession, particularly in or near their own half, to win the ball high up the pitch. High-press systems (associated with Klopp, Guardiola) are measured by PPDA (Passes Per Defensive Action) — lower PPDA indicates more intense pressing. Gegenpressing (counter-pressing) is the immediate press after losing possession before the opponent can organise. Effective pressing requires high fitness, coordinated trigger points and spatial understanding. It can create turnovers in dangerous positions but leaves space behind if bypassed.
