What is Power-to-Weight Ratio?

A cyclist's power output divided by bodyweight, in watts per kilogram — the key climbing metric.

Power-to-weight ratio (W/kg) is sustained power divided by bodyweight. It matters most when climbing or accelerating, because gravity acts on total mass: two riders with equal power but different weights climb very differently. It is usually quoted at threshold (around FTP). Pros sustain over 5 W/kg; a strong amateur is 3-4 W/kg. You improve it by raising power, lowering weight, or both.

Key points
  • Watts ÷ bodyweight (W/kg)
  • Decisive for climbing
  • Quoted near threshold (FTP)
  • Pros 5+ W/kg, amateurs 3-4
