What is Possession Percentage?

The share of match time a team controls the ball, a proxy for territorial dominance.

Possession percentage measures how much of a match a team has the ball. A 60/40 possession split means the dominant team had the ball for 60% of playing time. High possession is associated with control and pressing styles (e.g. Guardiola-era teams) but does not guarantee winning — counter-attacking teams often win with 40% possession. Possession is now routinely displayed on broadcasts and tracked via player GPS and optical tracking systems.
