In ice hockey, a goal is worth 1 point to the scorer. Up to two assistants also each receive 1 point. A single goal can therefore generate up to 3 total points (1 for the scorer, 2 for assistants). Points (goals + assists) is the standard measure of offensive productivity. Points per game (P/GP) normalises for different numbers of games played, making it the preferred rate stat for comparing players across seasons or teams.
