A Handicap Index under the World Handicap System (WHS) represents a golfer’s potential ability, expressed as a number to one decimal place. It is calculated from the best score differentials of recent rounds, with a 0.96 multiplier applied. To find the strokes given at a specific course (Course Handicap), use: Handicap Index × Slope ÷ 113 ± (Par − Course Rating). A scratch golfer has a 0 handicap index; beginners start with high indices (28 for men, 36 for women maximum). The WHS replaced multiple regional systems in 2020.
