What is Measure (Fencing Distance)?

The distance between fencers — controlling it is the foundation of fencing tactics.

Measure is the distance between two fencers and managing it is the heart of fencing. ‘Correct’ measure means being just far enough that your opponent cannot hit you without stepping in, while you can reach them with a single action (typically a lunge). The entire bout is a battle to control this distance through footwork — advancing to apply pressure, retreating to evade, and choosing the moment to attack when the measure is right. A fencer who controls measure dictates the bout; coaches stress that distance control matters more than raw blade speed.
