Draw weight is the peak force (in pounds) required to fully draw a recurve or longbow, or the set weight of a compound bow at full draw. Recurve and longbow draw weight increases with draw length; compound bows have a fixed peak weight with a let-off at full draw. Most beginners start at 20-28 lbs for recurve. Higher draw weight produces faster arrows and more kinetic energy for hunting, but requires more strength to shoot accurately and consistently. Poor form from overdrawing is the most common beginner mistake.
- Peak force to fully draw the bow
- Recurve increases with draw length
- Start light — form beats draw weight
- Higher weight = faster arrows
