What is Detraining?

The loss of training adaptations when training stops or reduces significantly — fitness declines but more slowly than it was gained.

Detraining is the partial or complete loss of training-induced adaptations following a cessation or significant reduction in training. Cardiovascular fitness (VO2 max) begins declining within about two weeks of stopping, with noticeable losses by 3-4 weeks. Strength is retained longer than endurance — meaningful strength loss takes several weeks. The good news: previously trained individuals regain fitness faster than untrained beginners (‘muscle memory’), partly due to retained neural adaptations and myonuclei. Maintenance training (even reduced volume) preserves most fitness.

Key points
  • Loss of adaptations when training stops
  • VO2 max declines within ~2 weeks
  • Strength retained longer than endurance
  • Regained faster than first time (muscle memory)
