What is Supercompensation?

The rebound above baseline fitness that occurs after recovery from a training stress — the foundation of all training adaptation.

Supercompensation describes the body’s adaptive response to training: a training session causes fatigue and a temporary dip in performance; with adequate recovery and nutrition, the body rebuilds not just to baseline but slightly above it (supercompensation). Training again at the peak of supercompensation drives progressive improvement. Training too soon (before recovery) accumulates fatigue; training too late lets the supercompensation fade. The timing of this curve is the basis of periodisation, deloads and tapering. Different systems supercompensate on different timelines — glycogen in hours, muscle in days, connective tissue over weeks.
