What is Core Stability?

The ability of the trunk muscles to maintain a stable spine and transfer force between the upper and lower body.

Core stability is the capacity of the muscles around the trunk and pelvis (abdominals, obliques, erector spinae, glutes, diaphragm) to maintain a stable, controlled spine during movement. It enables efficient force transfer between the upper and lower body — essential in nearly every athletic action, from a tennis serve to a deadlift. Core stability is better developed through anti-movement exercises (planks, anti-rotation holds, carries) than through high-rep flexion (sit-ups), and underpins both performance and lower-back injury prevention.
