Reach in boxing is the measurement from one fingertip to the other with arms extended horizontally. A longer reach allows a fighter to land punches while staying outside the opponent’s range. The average person’s reach roughly equals their height; fighters with ‘positive reach’ (longer reach than height) have a natural physical advantage. However, many great champions had below-average reach and compensated with superior footwork, timing and inside fighting.
Key points
- Fingertip to fingertip with arms extended
- Average reach ≈ height
- Positive reach = longer than height
- Shorter reach compensated by timing and footwork
