What is Bonus Points (Rugby Union)?

Extra league points for scoring four tries, or for losing by seven or fewer.

Most professional union competitions use a bonus-point system: 1 bonus point for scoring four or more tries in a match, and 1 bonus point for losing by 7 or fewer (a losing bonus). Both can be earned in the same game. The system rewards attacking play and keeps matches competitive until the final whistle even when the result is already decided.

Key points
  • 4+ tries in a match = 1 bonus point
  • Losing by ≤7 = 1 bonus point
  • Both earnable in same match
