The core wall rule
Legal vs illegal wall shots
| Scenario | Legal? |
|---|---|
| Ball bounces on court, then hits your back glass, you return it | ✅ Legal |
| Ball hits the wall directly (no bounce first), you return it | ❌ Illegal — point to opponent |
| Ball bounces on court, hits side wall, then back wall, you return it | ✅ Legal — any number of wall contacts is fine after the bounce |
| Ball bounces on your side, crosses the net, bounces on opponent's side, then hits their wall before they return | ✅ Legal for them, same rule applies each side |
| Your shot goes over the wall/fence out of the court entirely | ❌ Point to opponent (out of bounds) |
What about hitting the ball out of the court and playing it back?
If the ball goes over the surrounding fence into the "corridor" area outside the court, some clubs and competitions allow a player to leave the court and play the ball back in through the designated door, as long as it hasn't bounced twice. Rules on this vary by federation and venue — check local rules before assuming this applies.

Frequently asked questions
Can you hit the ball directly off the wall without it bouncing first?
No — this is the single most common padel rule mistake for tennis players switching sports. The ball must bounce on the court surface before it's legal to play off a wall. Hitting it directly off the wall before any bounce is a fault and the point goes to your opponents.
How many times can the ball hit the walls before you return it?
There's no limit on the number of wall contacts, as long as the ball bounced on the court first and you return it before it bounces a second time. It's common to see the ball hit a side wall then the back wall (or vice versa) before a player plays their shot.
