What's the difference between foil, épée and sabre?
Foil targets the torso (point only, with right-of-way). Épée targets the whole body (point only, no right-of-way — first hit scores). Sabre targets above the waist (both cutting and thrusting, with right-of-way). Épée is the most duel-like (any touch counts), foil the most technical, and sabre the fastest and most aggressive.
What is right-of-way in fencing?
Right-of-way (priority) is a rule in foil and sabre that decides who scores when both fencers land a hit. The fencer who correctly initiated the attack (or took priority by parrying) has right-of-way and scores. It rewards correct attacking and defensive actions, turning the bout into a tactical 'conversation'. Épée has no right-of-way — whoever hits first simply scores.
