Frequently asked questions
What is a good PPG in basketball?
In the NBA, 20+ PPG marks a consistent star scorer; 30+ is elite (only a handful of players have averaged 30+ for a full season in NBA history). At NCAA Division I level, 15+ PPG is strong. For recreational and high school leagues the numbers vary enormously by competition level — within your own team and league is the meaningful comparison.
What is the difference between PPG and per-36-minute average?
PPG (points per game) is simply total points divided by games played. Per-36-minute average normalises for playing time — it shows what a player would average if they played 36 minutes every game, which is roughly a full NBA game's worth of minutes. Per-36 is more useful for comparing bench players (who may only play 18–20 minutes) against starters, because raw PPG is artificially low for players with limited court time.
What is an assist-to-turnover ratio?
Assists ÷ turnovers. A ratio above 2:1 is generally considered good for a guard or point guard at any level. Elite point guards often maintain 3:1 or higher. The ratio measures decision-making quality — a player who racks up assists but also turns the ball over frequently is less valuable than the raw assist total suggests.
How do you calculate rebounds per game?
Total rebounds ÷ games played, in exactly the same way as PPG. Offensive and defensive rebounds are tracked separately. In the NBA, 10+ total RPG is an elite rebounder; 7–9 is a strong contributor. Per-36 rebound averages are particularly useful for centres who play variable minutes.
