What is Surfboard Volume?

The litres of foam in a surfboard — the key number determining flotation, paddling ease and wave-catching ability.

Surfboard volume, measured in litres, quantifies how much foam (and therefore flotation) a board has. It is the single most useful number for choosing a board, more meaningful than length alone. More volume floats the rider higher, paddles faster and catches waves more easily — ideal for beginners and small waves. Less volume sits lower, is more responsive and easier to duck-dive and turn — suited to advanced surfers and powerful waves. A rough starting guide: beginners around 0.9× bodyweight (kg), advanced surfers around 0.35-0.4×. Fitness, age and wave type adjust this.

Key points
  • Measured in litres — flotation of the board
  • More volume = easier paddling and wave-catching
  • Less volume = more responsive, harder to paddle
  • Beginner ~0.9× bodyweight; advanced ~0.4×
