Sports vision encompasses the visual skills that determine athletic performance beyond standard 20/20 acuity: dynamic visual acuity (tracking moving objects), depth perception (judging distances), peripheral vision awareness, contrast sensitivity and visual reaction time. Studies show elite athletes in ball sports have measurably superior dynamic visual acuity and anticipation compared to recreational players — though some of this is learned (experienced cricketers anticipate ball trajectory earlier). Sports vision training (tracking exercises, strobe glasses, visual reaction drills) can improve these skills. Contact lenses and sports-specific prescription eyewear are also considerations.
- Beyond 20/20: dynamic acuity, depth perception, anticipation
- Elite ball sport athletes show superior visual tracking
- Sports vision training can develop these skills
- Anticipation (experience-based) is the biggest factor
