What is Biomechanics?

The study of mechanical laws applied to movement — the science underpinning technique in every sport.

Biomechanics applies physics and mechanics to human movement. In sport, it explains why certain techniques are more efficient (the bent arm pull in swimming, the hip hinge pattern in deadlift, the spiral of a football throw). Kinematic analysis (motion capture) and kinetic analysis (force plates) are tools used to measure and improve technique. Good biomechanics reduces injury risk and improves performance simultaneously — inefficient movement wastes energy and often places greater stress on joints. Sports coaches increasingly use video analysis and wearable sensors to apply biomechanical principles to athlete development.
