The shuttlecock (or shuttle, birdie) is badminton’s unique projectile: a cork or rubber base with a conical skirt of 16 feather (or synthetic nylon) vanes. Its open conical shape creates enormous aerodynamic drag, causing it to decelerate faster than any other sporting projectile and always to fly base-first. This is why a smash can leave the racket at over 400 km/h yet slow dramatically before crossing the net. Feather shuttles fly truer and are used in elite play; durable nylon shuttles are common for recreation and training. The shuttle’s flight characteristics shape badminton’s entire tactical game.
