Power-to-weight ratio (P/W) normalises strength or power output for body mass, allowing fair comparison between athletes of different sizes. In cycling, it is expressed as watts per kilogram (W/kg) of FTP. In weightlifting, it informs relative strength comparisons. In running and climbing, lighter athletes with equivalent absolute strength or power have a significant advantage because they carry less mass against gravity. Track cyclist sprint power can exceed 25 W/kg for less than one second; road cyclists sustain 5.5-7.0 W/kg for an hour. P/W is particularly important in all hill-based sports.
