What is Footwork?

The efficient movement and positioning of the feet to get the body into the optimal position to play a shot or make a move.

Footwork is the foundation of performance in racket sports, boxing, fencing and many others — the efficient, balanced movement of the feet to position the body optimally. Good footwork gets a player to the shuttle, ball or opponent early, in balance, ready to execute. In badminton it involves chassés, lunges and recovery steps to cover the court; in boxing, it controls range and angles; in tennis, it sets up every groundstroke. Footwork is often the difference between club and elite players — elite athletes appear to have more time precisely because their footwork gets them into position early. It is trained through ladder drills, shadow practice and repetition.
