Cold water immersion (CWI) is used by athletes to reduce perceived soreness and promote recovery after intense training or competition. Mechanisms: vasoconstriction reduces blood flow to muscles (reducing inflammatory metabolites), thermal shock activates cold shock proteins, and sympathetic activation reduces neural fatigue. Research shows CWI effectively reduces DOMS and perceived soreness in the 24-48 hours after training. However, when used after strength training, CWI may blunt hypertrophy adaptation by reducing the inflammatory signal needed for muscle protein synthesis. Most sports medicine guidelines recommend reserving CWI for after competition, not after strength sessions.
- 10-15°C for 10-15 minutes post-exercise
- Reduces DOMS and soreness perception
- May blunt muscle hypertrophy signal
- Best used post-competition, not post-strength training
