What is Anabolic Window?

The period after exercise thought to maximise muscle protein synthesis — now known to be much wider than the original 30-minute claim.

The ‘anabolic window’ refers to the post-exercise period when muscle protein synthesis (MPS) is elevated and nutrients are particularly well used for recovery and growth. Originally marketed as a 30-minute window requiring immediate post-workout protein, research has shown the window is 4-6 hours (or even longer) after training. This means ‘eating within 30 minutes’ is not critical for most people who ate a protein-containing meal within a few hours before training. Total daily protein intake (1.6-2.2g/kg) is far more important than precise timing for most athletes.

Key points
  • Originally claimed: 30-minute post-workout window
  • Research consensus: 4-6+ hour window
  • Pre-workout protein meal counts toward the window
  • Total daily protein intake matters more than timing
