Zwift (Indoor) vs Outdoor Cycling

Zwift and indoor trainer cycling is perfectly controlled, highly efficient training — no traffic, no coasting, no weather.

Quick answerZwift and indoor trainer cycling is perfectly controlled, highly efficient training — no traffic, no coasting, no weather. Outdoor cycling builds real-world skills, varied terrain, is more enjoyable for many and keeps cycling a sport rather than just training. For building fitness, indoor training is arguably more efficient; for keeping cycling fun, outdoors is essential. Most serious cyclists use both.

FAQ

Is Zwift actually harder than riding outside?

Indoors often feels harder for the same power output — no breeze, higher core temperature and no coasting make sustained efforts more demanding. 250W on a turbo trainer tends to feel harder than 250W on the road.

What trainer do I need for Zwift?

Any smart trainer that broadcasts power via ANT+ or Bluetooth will work with Zwift. Direct-drive trainers (like the Wahoo Kickr) are quieter and more accurate than wheel-on trainers.

What is ERG mode on Zwift?

ERG mode (Ergometer mode) on Zwift automatically adjusts the resistance of a smart trainer to maintain a target power output regardless of the rider's cadence. If you target 200 watts and cadence drops, the resistance increases to maintain 200w. ERG mode is used for structured interval workouts where hitting precise power targets matters. It is not used for free riding or racing, where resistance changes with gradient as it would outdoors.
