Should beginners use free weights or machines?
Either works, but many coaches recommend starting with machines for safety and confidence building, then progressing to free weights as movement patterns and strength develop. Compound free weight movements (squat, deadlift, bench, row) deliver better long-term results.
Are machines useless for strength?
Not at all — machines allow safe progressive overload, excellent isolation and high-rep pump work without a spotter. Elite bodybuilders use machines extensively. The criticism is that machine-only training misses stabiliser development, not that machines don't build muscle.
Which machines are actually effective?
Machines that generally provide genuine value: lat pulldown and cable rows (effective for back development when free weight pulling is limited); leg press (useful for volume when squatting is difficult); cable machines (provide constant tension and excellent angles for isolation work); seated chest press (good for beginners learning pushing mechanics). The most overused ineffective machines tend to be inner/outer thigh adductor machines and rotary torso machines, which have limited evidence for the targeted outcomes.
